Friday’s open print studio was busy with people getting final printing done for the MCA zine fair this Sunday 24 May.

Mechelle came in and had a crash course in pagination and printing on the RZA off the glass, and started printing her zine of illustrations – beautiful line drawings of sweet food. She’s printed the pages in red, black and blue, on a linen-style paper that we found at the back of a cupboard (we have stocks of donated or cheaply acquired paper, often seconds – feel free to drop by on an open studio day to see what we have that you can print on).

By all accounts, the rizzeria open print studios are going great guns! Last fortnight, I helped textaqueen make some posters and printed some covers and endpapers for one of my zines, but this week I have been swamped by print jobs.

The covers of Vanessa Berry’s 13th issue of I am a camera were first. Believe me when I say they look beautiful! Unfortunately, I was unable to capture the elusive Miss Berry on film, but she will be selling her zine at the MCA Zine Fair on May 24th for a paltry $6. You may also want to check out the current show ‘Avoiding Myth and Message’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art, which includes all of Vanessa’s zines over the last decade or so.

Second were flyers for Alice Williams’ No Man is an Island and Nick Sun’s Why Smoothness, both performances of some description, which will be held at Serial Space (33 Wellington Street Chippendale) on May 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th at 7:30pm. It will cost you between seven and ten dollars depending on your socioeconomic status, and you can book a ticket by calling Alice on 0402 094 738.

It should be noted that while I was printing Alice’s job, someone else came to the rizzeria without a booking, looking to have some work printed. I had to turn them away, as I already had too many jobs. Take heed! It is important to book your jobs for the open print studio ahead of time.

Finally, I helped artist extraordinaire Heesco to print some lovely 2-colour art prints. Heesco will be selling these in an extremely limited edition of 50 for a mere $20 each, at both Kinokuniya’s May 2nd zine fair, and the MCA’s May 24th zine fair. I too will be at all these events, and I’ll be selling some of my own work as well.
